Principal's Blog - January 2019

It was really great to see students return from their Christmas and New Year breaks and settle back into learning so well. We have started 2019 in our usual upbeat way and I have been pleased to share with students our plans about forthcoming student leadership positions. We are excited about the elections next month when all students will get to vote for the most suitable candidates for the positions of student President and Vice President. These are very important positions for the college as student leadership genuinely contributes to positively shape the ethos of our college. Other important students posts will be filled soon after these elections.

Last Term

Last term was very long and busy. But, I am really proud of the commitment from students to their studies. But it wasn't all work and it was great to witness all our students participating in training and enrichment so enthusiastically. For example:

  • A group of students participated in the lego league ‘Into Orbit’ tournament, coming away as worthy ‘Best Design Winners’. This accolade was awarded for the excellent balance of function and form presented in the entry.

  • We had a wonderful end of term whole college assembly just before the Christmas break. Special thanks goes to musical performances from ‘the Bradstreet Boys’ and Tom H, who treated us to a truly memorable rendition of ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ in which the audience, shall we say, fully participated.

Life After College

For students in Year 13 of the Sixth Form, this is a crucial time. Not only are students expected to be studying diligently as usual but at the same time they are having to take formal steps towards a meaningful life after college. With the help of the college’s information and guidance team, I am delighted that all students have made now plans and steps towards securing exciting placements of continuing education or further training. All students have either applied for university or a apprenticeship. The quality of applications submitted  have been truly excellent and I am already proud of the contribution that the first ‘leavers‘ of UTC Portsmouth will certainly make to the world of STEM.

Sixth Form Applications

The number of applications for entry the our Sixth Form in September 2019 has already significantly passed the number received a year ago. It has been a real pleasure to interview so many ambitious and eloquent students who are excited about furthering their studies in a STEM area. The application window is still open for  few days more. So, please do not hesitate to contact us if you are interested in joining UTC Portsmouth
