UTC Portsmouth Hosts Maths Challenge

UTC Portsmouth was proud to host the UTC Maths Challenge this June, bringing together talented young mathematicians from across the city. We were delighted to welcome teams from The Portsmouth Grammar School, Mayville High School, and our own UTC Portsmouth for a morning of intense problem-solving and collaborative thinking.

The competition, designed to stretch students’ skills beyond the classroom, featured four challenging rounds. Each round tested a different aspect of mathematical ability - from quick-fire calculations and logical reasoning to multi-step problem-solving and applied maths tasks. Throughout the event, students demonstrated exceptional focus, resilience, and creativity, working together to overcome complex challenges under time pressure.

After a closely fought contest, The Portsmouth Grammar School took first place, with one of our UTC Portsmouth teams achieving a well-deserved second place. The standard of competition was incredibly high, and every participant should be proud of their performance.

The day also highlighted the value of peer-led learning, as our Year 12 students played a central role in creating and running the challenge. From designing questions to managing the rounds, they ensured the event ran smoothly and showcased the leadership and organisational skills we actively encourage at UTC Portsmouth.

Events like the UTC Maths Challenge embody our commitment to developing STEM habits - such as teamwork, creative problem-solving, and perseverance - in a fun, competitive, and inspiring environment. We look forward to building on this year’s success and continuing to provide opportunities for students to push the boundaries of their mathematical thinking.
